Frequently asked questions
What is unit price and why does it matter?
Unit price is the cost per standard unit — per ounce, per liter, per count — so you can compare products sold in different sizes or packages. A $4.99 12-ounce jar and a $6.49 18-ounce jar are not comparable by sticker price, but their per-ounce cost tells you which is the better deal (here $0.416 vs $0.361 an ounce, so the bigger jar wins).
Should I always buy the bigger size?
Usually the larger package has the lower unit price, but not always — bulk "value" packs sometimes cost more per unit than the mid-size. Compare the unit price, not the size. Also factor in whether you will actually use it before it expires; a cheap-per-unit deal you throw away is not a deal.
How do I compare across different units (oz vs lb)?
Pick the same unit for both products using the unit selector. If one is in ounces and the other in pounds, set both to ounces (or both to pounds) before comparing — the calculator keeps the unit you choose consistent for the side-by-side.
Does this include coupons or store brands?
No. Enter the price you actually pay after any coupon, and the calculator will reflect the true unit cost of that transaction. Store brands often beat name brands on unit price even at full price.
