Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate square footage of a room?

For a rectangular room, multiply length by width (in feet): a 12 ft × 15 ft room is 180 sq ft. For L-shaped rooms, split the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add them together. The calculator above also converts the result to square meters.

How many square feet is a 12×12 room?

A 12 ft × 12 ft room is 144 square feet (about 13.4 square meters). This is a handy benchmark: flooring is often priced per box covering a fixed area, so divide your total sq ft by the box coverage and add about 10% for cutting waste.

Does square footage include walls and closets?

It depends on the purpose. Real estate listings usually measure from the exterior walls and include all finished, heated space (including closets) above grade — but exclude garages, unfinished basements and porches. For flooring projects, measure the actual floor area room by room and add 5–15% waste depending on the material and layout.
