Frequently asked questions
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course’s grade points by its credit hours, add them all up, and divide by total credit hours. For example: an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course plus a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course gives (4×3 + 3×4) ÷ 7 = 24 ÷ 7 ≈ 3.43 GPA. Credits matter — that 4-credit B pulls harder than the 3-credit A.
What is a good GPA?
On the standard 4.0 scale: 3.0 is the common baseline for good academic standing and many employers; 3.5+ opens graduate school and competitive internships; 3.8+ is typically needed for top-tier programs and honor societies. Context matters — engineering programs often weight a 3.2 as equivalent to a 3.6 elsewhere.
Do pass/fail and AP courses affect GPA?
Pass/fail courses usually don’t enter GPA math (a pass earns credit, not points) — leave them out of this calculator. Weighted high school scales give AP/IB courses 5.0 points for an A and honors 4.5; if your school uses a weighted scale, adjust the grade points field accordingly.
