Frequently asked questions

How do dog years actually work?

The old “multiply by 7” rule is a myth. Dogs mature far faster in their first two years — reaching roughly the equivalent of their early twenties — then age about 4–5 human years per calendar year depending on size. The formula this tool uses comes from a 2020 study of Labrador retriever DNA methylation patterns.

Why do smaller dogs live longer than big dogs?

Counterintuitively, among dogs the larger the breed, the shorter the lifespan — Great Danes may live 7–8 years while Chihuahuas can reach 15+. Researchers think large dogs grow unusually fast, which may accelerate aging. This is why the calculator asks for size category: a 6-year-old Great Dane is “older” biologically than a 6-year-old Beagle.

When is a dog considered a senior?

Generally: small dogs around 10–11 human-equivalent years (calendar age ~10), medium dogs around 8–9, and large/giant breeds as early as 6 calendar years. Senior dogs benefit from twice-yearly vet checkups, joint support and adjusted exercise — worth knowing earlier rather than later.
