Frequently asked questions

What does AA and AAA mean?

WCAG levels. AA needs a 4.5:1 contrast for normal text (3:1 for large text) and AAA needs 7:1 (4.5:1 large). Large text is 18pt+ or 14pt+ bold.

How is the contrast ratio calculated?

From the relative luminance of each color using the WCAG formula: (L1 + 0.05) / (L2 + 0.05), where L1 is the lighter color.

Is this accurate enough for accessibility audits?

Yes for the math. For full audits also check color blindness, focus states and non-text contrast.
